Greek Language Retreat Autumn 2026 Zaros, Crete

A Greek Language Retreat Like No Other…

Imagine waking up in a traditional Cretan stone house surrounded by olive trees. After opening the window to a striking view over the valley, you walk to an ancient kitchen with a delicate smell of coffee welcoming you with fresh fruits from the garden, and much more. On the terrace, you meet your fellow learners and teacher and start small talk in Greek.

That is how we start our days. We will continue enjoying a Greek lifestyle, mingling, conversations, cultural activities, and gentle walks. You will discover beautiful landmarks, learn about their history and taste delicious Cretan cuisine in local rural tavernas.

At Philomilo, we know that the more relaxed and enjoyable you are, the better you will learn. Our retreats focus on conversation and practice with the support of a dedicated Greek Teacher.

Why would you want to come to Zaros?

To experience the authentic rural Crete beauty, warmth and food!

🌿 Natural Beauty

  • Lake Votomos: A peaceful artificial lake surrounded by lush greenery, walking paths, and traditional tavernas. It is stocked with trout and other fish, making it a scenic and culinary highlight.

  • Rouvas Gorge: Starting near Zaros, this gorge is part of the Rouvas Forest — a pristine area of cypresses, oaks, and endemic flora. The moderate hiking route leads to the Rouvas Monastery and offers breathtaking views along the way.

  • Mount Psiloritis: The highest mountain in Crete dominates the village, providing a dramatic backdrop and opportunities for more adventurous hiking or exploring the myth-rich Ideon Cave nearby.

    🏡 Village Atmosphere

    • Zaros maintains a traditional Cretan village feel: stone houses, winding lanes, small churches, and locals who greet you with genuine warmth. It hasn’t been overly affected by mass tourism, so the experience feels authentic.

    • Many homes still produce olive oil, honey, herbal teas, and raki, and local cooperatives sell high-quality organic goods.

    🍽️ Local Cuisine

    • Zaros is renowned for its fresh trout, thanks to the clear mountain springs in the area.

    • Taverns serve traditional dishes using ingredients grown or caught locally. Think handmade pies, snails, mountain greens, and wood-oven-cooked meats.

      🕊️ Cultural and Spiritual Charm

      • Several small Byzantine chapels and monasteries, including the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos, add a sense of timelessness to the area.

      • Zaros also hosts religious festivals and music events throughout the year that highlight Cretan culture.

      🚶‍♀️ Peaceful Slow Living

      • The air is clean and crisp, and the soundscape is more birdsong and breeze than traffic.

      • It’s a great spot for people seeking eco-tourism, hiking, meditation, or a digital detox.

      Testimonials

Let’s read what our students and guests have to say about their experience!

Another great trip for me. Staying on an eco-friendly farm in central Crete during the week running up to Easter, we took part in many Greek traditions, from cooking to visiting a local monastery on Palm Sunday.

We went on a nature walk where one of our hosts, Michalis, showed us how to live off what the land offers, as well as explaining the history of the area.  We also toured around Velina & Michalis’s farm, cooking our own Easter breads and biscuits, watching the cheese being made and petting the animals on the farm, finally ending off the morning with the most amazing lunch prepared by Velina and her staff.

Our guest lecturer, Katerina, was brilliant at lesson time, choosing innovative ways in which to teach us the language.  At other times, she would make sure she tested our Greek over lunch or dinner!

If you have a little knowledge of Greek to begin with then you would gain more from the Greek language side of the Retreat.  If you simply want to immerse yourself in Greek life and culture, then this is another wonderful trip to go on.

      Zaros April 2025, UK

I took part in the first session of classes and discovery of Crete organised by my Greek teacher, Poppie Raphaelaki.

We were a small group of women of different nationalities, hosted in the beautiful house adjoining Michalis’ farm in the heart of nature. The house was truly stunning, with authentic Cretan décor, charming rooms, a pool, and peaceful spots to recharge.

Poppie introduced us to Cretan life: traditional restaurants in small villages, mountain excursions to discover plants, and visits to a nearby lake or a magnificent gorge. At Michalis and his wife Velina’s farm, we made bread, cheese, and meals and explored every aspect of the farm. There were many laughs, emotions, and sharing moments throughout the stay.

In the morning, breakfast was more than generous, and the meals were an opportunity to learn about Cretan cuisine.

Poppie is very caring and adapts to each participant; she has a real gift for organisation, ensuring a balance between activities and rest, and knows how to create a great atmosphere.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t join the other sessions, but I will definitely return.
