Immersive 6-Day
Greek Language Retreat

Crete: Xerocambos

From the 14th to the 19th of October 2026

Greek Language Retreat in Crete Xerocamobos by Philomilo

Discover an Immersive Greek Language Retreat in the Wild Beauty of Xerocambos, Crete!

Join us in this remote and striking corner of Crete for a week where language learning blends naturally with landscape, culture, and everyday life. With your Greek teacher as your companion, you’ll practice and grow through conversations, shared meals, and encounters that bring the language off the page and into the world around you.

Xerocambos offers a setting unlike any other: rugged mountains falling into deep blue sea, long stretches of quiet beach, and villages where tradition is still lived, not displayed. You’ll taste honest Cretan cooking, hear stories carried through generations, and walk paths where the rhythm of the island is felt in every step.

This is more than a language retreat. It is a chance to slow down, to connect, and to experience Greek as it lives today — in the landscape, in the people, and in yourself.

Learn, explore, and reconnect — the Cretan way.

The Retreat Program

Day 1

Arrive in Xerocambos and settle into Asteras Studios, our warm and welcoming base for the retreat. As evening falls we gather for our first dinner in one of the local tavernas. This meal is our first chance to put the Greek you know into practice — you will order, ask, and respond in Greek, and you will be ready.

Day 2

After breakfast we head to the beautiful village of Zakros. We stroll through its narrow alleys, visit the springs, and take our time absorbing the atmosphere of this quiet corner of Crete. The morning concludes in Christina’s family olive grove, where you will taste freshly pressed olive oil and enjoy a simple lunch beneath the trees.
The afternoon is yours to rest or explore. Dinner is open for the group to decide together.

Day 3

Following breakfast we set off on a guided road trip through the mountainous villages around Sitia, following a circular route that reveals Venetian and Ottoman traces, stone houses, and everyday village life far from the tourist routes. We walk cobblestone streets, sit for coffee in a traditional kafenio, and take a short detour to Sykia for a typical Cretan meal before continuing back to Xerocambos.
The excursion lasts about five to six hours. The afternoon is free, and dinner will again be decided among the group.

Day 4

After breakfast we take a boat to the uninhabited, protected island of Koufonissi. Here we visit the small Minoan settlement, spend time on the beach, and enjoy a light lunch prepared by our captain and crew. The day offers many chances to connect language and culture in a very natural way.
We return to Xerocambos in the late afternoon. Dinner is open for the group to decide.

In case the weather does not allow the boat trip:
We replace the excursion with a walk through the Gorge of the Dead, ending at the Minoan Palace of Zakros, one of the most significant Minoan sites on Crete. The trail is easy, with a few sections that require attention, and is well suited to beginners.

Day 5

After breakfast we dedicate time to deeper learning: a lecture followed by short individual sessions for each participant with me and our guest lecturer. This is an opportunity to ask, clarify, and sharpen your Greek.
The rest of the day is completely free. In the evening we come together for our farewell dinner at Liviko Restaurant, followed by a tasting of Toplou monastery wines — award-winning wines that truly represent Cretan craft. The restaurant is within walking distance of our accommodation, and you can enjoy the evening without concern. Expect excellent food, genuine hospitality, and a warm, festive atmosphere.

Day 6

Check-out by 11:00 a.m., with time to say good-bye to Crete and to the friendships formed along the way.

Focus on conversation and practice!

Our Greek Language Retreat focuses on conversation whether you are a beginner or already speak some Greek. Your teachers will assist you with grammar and vocabulary throughout. During the lessons the group will be split so that beginers can go through essential Greek bases and more advanced can practice conversation supported by a teacher’s guidance.

Every activities become a pretext to practice and expand your vobabulary.

We are moving the classroom outdoor! You will learn through visits of historical sites, tasting and discovering Xerocambos and its surrounding beauty.

Every morning, we will explore the vocabulary of the day so that each time you experience words in their context, they will be easier to understand and integrate.

At Philomilo, we truly believe that the more your experience a language while enjoying yourself, the more what you learn will stick with you. Studies have proven that what was learned through pleasure and fun would be better remembered. So, we created this amazing experiencial greek language retreat designed to help you grow your language skills while enjoying the culture and adventures.

Why would you want to come to Xerocambos this October?

Landscape & Atmosphere

A remote coastal zone of eastern Crete with dramatic cliffs, long beaches, and very low development. It is one of the most untouched stretches of the island, ideal for walking and immersion.

Zakros – Minoan Palace & Archaeology

Zakros hosts one of the four Minoan palaces. It is smaller than Knossos or Phaistos but extremely well preserved and set in striking landscape.

Sitia – Cretan Town Life & Culture

A lively small town with strong local culture, food, and everyday Cretan life. Good base for exploring the eastern region.

      Epic Circular Route

This route crosses traditional villages, olive groves, and high plateau views, showing rural Cretan architecture and daily life away from tourist zones.

Koufonissi – Crystal Waters & Island Setting

A very small island off the eastern coast, famous for extremely clear water and a relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for a boat excursion.

        Nature & Biodiversity (Eastern Crete)

The area is part of a wider protected natural zone with dunes, unique flora, and a very low pressure environment compared to the rest of Crete.

Born and raised in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, she is now based in Thessaloniki. She studied Classical Philology with a focus on Linguistics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and expanded her academic training through the Erasmus program at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. Since 2001, she has taught both Ancient and Modern Greek.

She is an active member of the association “To Paramikró: Creative + Learning Workshop,” where she helps design and lead language-centered activities, from creative theatre writing for teenagers to playful word-based workshops. Your Greek Dance Tutor & Guest Lecturer: Katina Dunkerly-Thompson

She believes that dance connects us to our ancestors, as they danced the same steps we dance today. With each step we dance along with those who danced before us. This is her Κέφι, her passion. As an instructor she enjoys sharing her knowledge and experience with others to keep the dances alive so we can keep our ancestors' footsteps going.

        Your Host: Margarita Giakoumakis

Each season brings new opportunities to create meaningful experiences for our guests, while winter is our time to plan the next one with enthusiasm.

        Testimonials

Let’s read what our students and guests have to say about their experience!

I took part in the first session of classes and discovery of Crete organised by my Greek teacher, Poppie Raphaelaki.

We were a small group of women of different nationalities, hosted in the beautiful house adjoining Michalis' farm in the heart of nature. The house was truly stunning, with authentic Cretan décor, charming rooms, a pool, and peaceful spots to recharge.

Poppie introduced us to Cretan life: traditional restaurants in small villages, mountain excursions to discover plants, and visits to a nearby lake or a magnificent gorge. At Michalis and his wife Velina’s farm, we made bread, cheese, and meals and explored every aspect of the farm. There were many laughs, emotions, and sharing moments throughout the stay.

In the morning, breakfast was more than generous, and the meals were an opportunity to learn about Cretan cuisine.

Poppie is very caring and adapts to each participant; she has a real gift for organisation, ensuring a balance between activities and rest, and knows how to create a great atmosphere.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t join the other sessions, but I will definitely return.

Retreat Zora - Crete 11 to 15 April 2024, France

Another great trip for me. Staying on an eco-friendly farm in central Crete during the week running up to Easter, we took part in many Greek traditions, from cooking to visiting a local monastery on Palm Sunday.

We went on a nature walk where one of our hosts, Michalis, showed us how to live off what the land offers, as well as explaining the history of the area.  We also toured around Velina & Michalis’s farm, cooking our own Easter breads and biscuits, watching the cheese being made and petting the animals on the farm, finally ending off the morning with the most amazing lunch prepared by Velina and her staff.

Our guest lecturer, Katerina, was brilliant at lesson time, choosing innovative ways in which to teach us the language.  At other times, she would make sure she tested our Greek over lunch or dinner!

If you have a little knowledge of Greek to begin with then you would gain more from the Greek language side of the Retreat.  If you simply want to immerse yourself in Greek life and culture, then this is another wonderful trip to go on.

        Zaros April 2025, UK

The retreat's setting was stunning. It is in the south-eastern corner of Crete, a remote and beautiful area (and geologically very interesting!).

The Retreat was very laid-back. You can partake in as much or as little as you wish. The excursions are great fun. We tasted olive oil, visited ancient sites and abandoned villages, walked the Zakros Gorge, ate very well, and, of course, had daily Greek lessons aimed at all abilities. Gianna, our guest lecturer, was enthusiastic and a very knowledgeable teacher.

If the weather is kind, you can relax on the nearby beach, swim, or read up on your Greek!

The one thing I would say is that this is not only a total immersion Greek language course, it is a cultural experience just as much.  And, if you are coming solely to learn Greek, rather than take in the whole itinerary, it would be better for you if you had a very basic knowledge to start with, as that would help with the mixed ability lessons.
